What TIBC measures

TIBC estimates how much iron the blood could carry if all transferrin were loaded. It tends to rise when iron is low.

If your TIBC is low

TIBC below the range is commonly associated with inflammation, liver conditions or iron overload.

Commonly associated with

Worth asking your clinician: How ferritin and inflammation markers look.

If your TIBC is high

TIBC above the range is commonly associated with low iron stores, as the body makes more transferrin to carry iron.

Commonly associated with

Worth asking your clinician: Whether ferritin confirms low iron.

Typical reference range

GroupTypical range
Adults250 – 450 ug/dL

Typical adult values used by many US labs. Your own report prints the range your lab validated for its method, and that range is the one that counts. Labwise always uses the printed range first.

If it is within range

Your TIBC is within the range printed by your lab.
