What BUN measures

BUN (blood urea nitrogen) is a waste product cleared by the kidneys. It also shifts with hydration and protein intake.

If your BUN is low

BUN below the range is commonly associated with low protein intake, overhydration or pregnancy, and is rarely a concern on its own.

Commonly associated with

Worth asking your clinician: Only alongside other questions about kidney or liver tests.

If your BUN is high

BUN above the range is commonly associated with dehydration, a high-protein diet or reduced kidney filtration; it is read together with creatinine.

Commonly associated with

Worth asking your clinician: Whether creatinine and eGFR tell the same story and whether a repeat when hydrated is useful.

Typical reference range

GroupTypical range
Adults7 – 25 mg/dL

Typical adult values used by many US labs. Your own report prints the range your lab validated for its method, and that range is the one that counts. Labwise always uses the printed range first.

If it is within range

Your BUN is within the range printed by your lab.
